The upset-minded Lady Eagles basketball squad from Williams Baptist College hosted the ninth ranked Scots from Lyon College on Saturday afternoon. The Lady Eagles held a lead for the majority of the game, stretching the lead to as high as ten, but were unable to hold on, as the Scots stormed back late in the fourth to take a 78-73 victory.
The game started well for WBC, as they made 10-of-15 shots in the first quarter, including 2-of-3 from 3-point range. Despite the shooting cooling off in the second quarter, they were able to take a 38-32 lead into halftime.
The Lady Eagles were hot from the field in the third quarter, only missing one of the eight shots taken. However, Lyon made seven field goals and scored eight free throws to stay within striking distance at 60-55, as the teams entered the final frame.
Williams held the lead until Lyon hit a 2-point bucket with 2:38 remaining in the contest, giving the Scots 68-67 lead. Lyon would not relinquish the lead down the stretch, as the Scots outscored Williams 10-6 in the final two minutes.
The Lady Eagles scorched the net throughout the game, as they made 25-of-46 shots for 54 percent. They also made 18-of-22 free throws in the contest.
However, Lyon took advantage of 13 offensive rebounds to score 19 second chance points. They also forced WBC into 19 turnovers, which led to 26 points.
Lyon shot 28 free throws, making 22 of them.
Four Reach Double-Figures:
Alytrius Perry (SR/Marked Tree, Ark. ) led the Lady Eagles with 23 points, making 6-of-9 shots in her 39 minutes of play. Andrea Moffitt (SR/Lexington, Tenn. ) scored 13 points and added eight rebounds. Alexus Clardy (SR/Conway, Ark. ) chipped in with 11 and Taylar Harris (JR/Joiner, Ark. ) scored 10.
Kiara Moore scored the game-high 29 points for Lyon.
The loss does not change WBC's place in the American Midwest Conference standings, as they continue to have a strong grasp on the final eighth and final playoff spot for the tournament. They lead Stephens College by 1.5 games. WBC sits a ½ game behind seventh place Missouri Baptist University.
Next up, the Lady Eagles will play a Valentine's Day special against Central Baptist College at 5:30, on Tuesday.
