Walnut Ridge, Ark. - The Eagles Cross Country team traveled to St. Louis, Mo., on Saturday for the Maryville University Open at Six Flags. Williams Baptist College finished fifth out of ten teams in the 8K event.
The men's squad finished third out of the five American Midwest Conference schools that competed. Williams finished behind overall winner Columbia College and third place William Woods University, but ahead of seventh place Missouri Baptist University and 10th place St. Louis College of Pharmacy.
The fifth place finish was highlighted by three runners who finished within the top 25. Alex Van Herpen (SO/Mansfield, Ark. ) (29:37, 16th) was the top Eagle finisher. John Fairris (JR/Strong, Ark. ) (30:04, 20th) and John Guyton (FR/Blytheville, Ark. ) (30:13, 22nd) finished within the top 25 with their respective times.
Rounding out the table for WBC were: Jack Wafler (FR/Bartlett, Tenn. ) (32:42, 37th), Antonio Carlos (33:13, 38th), Joey Colvert (FR/Bryant, Ark.) (33:13, 39th), Colton Yarbro (SO/Powhatan, Ark. ) (34:07, 45th), Dakota Dwyer (JR/Gassville, Ark. ) (34:17), Patrick Ponder (FR/Imboden, Ark. ) (34:47), Theron Newberry (FR/Paragould, Ark. ) (35:37), Noah Stoddard (JR/Paragould, Ark. ) (35:58), Josiah Marlow (FR/Imboden, Ark. ) (36:21) and Alex Cowgill (FR/East Prairie, Mo.) (37:26).
"I am very proud with how the men did this weekend," stated Head Coach Andrew Watson. "We had a nice blend of upperclassmen and newcomers in the top five. It will be exciting to see how they develop throughout the season."
The next meet for the Eagles cross country team will be the Chili Pepper Festival in Fayetteville, Ark., on Saturday, October 1. The men's 8K run is scheduled for a 9:45 a.m. start.
