The Williams Baptist College baseball team traveled to Henderson, Tenn., on Wednesday to compete in the American Midwest Conference Tournament. The sixth seeded Eagles faced the third seeded Mustangs of Central Baptist College and the seventh seeded Owls of William Woods University. The Eagles dropped a close 5-4 game to CBC on Wednesday night and lost the elimination game to WWU 8-3 on Thursday.
Central Baptist scored the first run of the game in the bottom of the second inning to earn an early 1-0 lead. The Eagles responded with three runs in the fourth. Michael Ludwig (SR/Heber Springs, Ark.) started the inning with a triple. Tyler Eudy (SO/Jonesboro, Ark.) then drove in Ludwig with an RBI single to left. Pedro Lopez (JR/Naples. Fla.) then smashed a two run double that scored Eudy and Tucker Smith (SR/Horn Lake, Miss.).
WBC held a 3-1 lead until the bottom of the seventh. CBC plated four runs in the frame to take a 5-3 lead. The Eagles took a run back in the top of the eighth on Eric Kent (SR/Ft. Madison, Iowa)'s sacrifice fly, but CBC held off any late rallies and took the game to advance in the tournament.
Ludwig led the team offensively with a 2-for-3 day with a triple and two runs scored. Eudy and Ryan Shelton (SR/Brentwood, Tenn.) both finished 2-for-4.
Braxton Rhodes (SO/Fayette, Ala.) took the loss on the mound. He threw seven innings, surrendered six hits, five earned runs, one walk and he posted six strikeouts.
The Eagles then squared off against WWU in an elimination game. WWU snagged an early 7-0 lead after four innings and cruised to the 8-3 victory.
The Eagles baseball team finished the season with an overall record of 22-29 and a 12-14 record in conference play. The 22 wins are the most wins in a season since 2001 and the 12 AMC wins are the most since conference records were kept, dating back to the 2005 season.
