The WBC baseball team traveled to St. Louis, Mo., on Friday afternoon for a three-game American Midwest Conference set against the tenth ranked Spartans of Missouri Baptist University. MBU took the first two games of the series, but the Eagles took game three, winning 11-3.
Missouri Baptist won game one a walk-off sacrifice fly in the bottom of the ninth inning. Offensively, Ryan Shelton (SR/Brentwood, Tenn.) went 3-for-4 with a double and run scored. Tanner Murray (SR/Piggott, Ark.) added a 2-for-3 day with a double and run scored.
Braxton Rhodes (SO/Fayette, Ala.) threw well in the first game of the series. He threw five innings, gave up five hits, two earned runs on one walk with two strikeouts. Anthony Noftsger (JR/Green Forest, Ark.) threw three shutout innings in relief of Rhodes. Noftsger gave up two hits, two walks and added one strikeout. Dylan Disotell (SR/Junction City, Ark.) suffered the loss after giving up a hit and a run in the ninth.
Errors plagued the Eagles in game two as the team committed six errors and MBU took advantage, scoring five runs for the victory. Hunter Marshall (FR/Harrison, Ark.) took the loss for Williams. He pitched five innings, gave up six hits, five runs, no earned runs, with two walks and he added four strikeouts. Offensively as a team, WBC out-hit MBU 10-6. Tucker Smith (SR/Horn Lake, Miss.) went 2-for-3 with a double and run scored to lead the offense. Pedro Lopez (JR/Naples. Fla.) went 2-for-4. Tanner Murray had a pinch-hit RBI single.
WBC scored two runs in the top of the first to jump out to the early 2-0 lead. The Spartans rallied to score twice in the bottom of the second to tie the game at 2-2. WBC then scored once in the third and fourth innings, then tacked on three more runs in the top of the fifth to take a 7-2 advantage. After Missouri Baptist scored a run in the bottom of the fifth to cut it to 7-3, the WBC bats continued to produce runs as the Eagles scored twice in the sixth and the ninth to take the 11-3 lead and a win over its top-ten conference foe.
Offensively for WBC, Ryan Shelton and Pedro Lopez were the bright spots for the team. Shelton had a perfect 4-for-4 outing at the plate with a double, RBI and three runs scored. Lopez, who led off the batting order for Williams, went 4-for-6 with a double, three RBIs, and two runs scored. Tanner Murray and Seth Hart (JR/Sedgwick, Ark. ) each went 2-for-4, with Hart adding a double. Nick Scott (JR/Jacksonville, Fla.) hit his first home run of the season and drove in a pair of runs. Ryan Cupp (JR/Paragould, Ark.) added a pair of RBIs.
Dalton Freshour (JR/West Plains, Mo.) pitched well in his third victory this season. His quality outing included six innings pitched, nine hits allowed, three earned runs, one walk and a pair of strikeouts. Josh McKeithen (SO/Commerce, Texas) and JP Ziegler (SR/Benton, Miss.) helped close the door in relief as they threw a combined three innings of shutout baseball.
The WBC baseball team picked up its ninth conference victory with Saturday's victory. This is the most conference wins for the team in the AMC dating back to 2004, when conference records started being kept.
The Eagles will travel to St. Louis again on Friday, April 22, for a critical three game set against Harris-Stowe State University. WBC will play one game on Friday, starting at 2 p.m., and will play a doubleheader on Saturday, starting at 12 p.m.
