The WBC baseball team hosted Texas A&M University-Texarkana on Tuesday afternoon in a matchup of Eagles vs. Eagles. TAMUT was able to take both contests and sweep the doubleheader.
Texarkana jumped on the scoreboard in the first inning, scoring three runs to take the early 3-0 lead. WBC responded in the bottom of the second inning, scoring three runs of its own on a wild pitch, balk and RBI groundout by Tanner Murray (SR/Piggott, Ark.). The contest remained 3-3 until the top of the fifth inning. TAMUT scored three more runs in the top of the fifth and one run in the top of the sixth to take a 7-3 advantage. Ryan Shelton (SR/Brentwood, Tenn.) doubled to left to start the bottom of the sixth and would later score on a wild pitch to cut the deficit to 7-4. Williams attempted a late comeback as the team loaded the bases with no outs in the bottom of the seventh. Tucker Smith (SR/Horn Lake, Miss.)'s sac fly cut the lead to 7-5. Braxton Rhodes (SO/Fayette, Ala.) followed up with a sac fly of his own in the next at-bat to cut it down to 7-6. Williams came up just short in the effort as TAMUT's Adam Falcon earned his fourth save of the year in the final inning.
In the second game, TAMUT took advantage of five WBC errors to score 12 runs on nine hits. After trailing 5-0 after 2.5 innings, WBC scored five runs in the bottom of the fifth to tie the game at 5-5. Texarkana scored two runs in the top of the fourth and five runs in the top of the sixth to pull away with its 22nd victory of the season.
Michael Ludwig (SR/Heber Springs, Ark.) had a 2-for-3 day at the plate, with two triples, one bouncing off the top of the WBC fence and falling back into the field. He also scored two runs, stole a base and had three RBIs. Ryan Shelton also collected multiple hits in the loss. His 2-for-4 outing included a double, two runs scored and RBI. Silas Huskey (FR/Harrison, Ark.) added a pair of RBIs.
The Eagles will return to American Midwest Conference play on Friday, April 1, against William Woods University. WBC will host the Owls in a three game set. First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m., on Friday. Williams and WWU will play two games on Saturday with a scheduled start time at noon.
