The Williams Baptist College baseball team traveled to Conway, Ark., on Friday for a three game American Midwest Conference series against in-state rival Central Baptist College. The Mustangs were able to take all three games of the series.
Williams found a 2-0 lead after the top of the second, as Braxton Rhodes (SO/Fayette, Ala.) doubled and would later score on a wild pitch. Hudson Ross (JR/Independence, Miss.) would drive in Michael Ludwig (SR/Heber Springs, Ark.) on an RBI single later in the inning. The game remained 2-0 until CBC scored its first run of the game in the fifth inning, cutting the deficit to 2-1. The Mustangs then scored three runs in the sixth and would add runs in the seventh and eighth innings to take the 7-2 victory. Ludwig, Rhodes, Ross and Ryan Shelton (SR/Brentwood, Tenn.) all had hits for Williams. Starter Ethan Quarles (SR/Millington, Tenn.) took the loss after throwing 5.2 innings. He gave up 10 hits, four earned runs on one walk and added four strikeouts.
Game two was the most interesting game of the series, as CBC rallied to take the 13-10 decision. After CBC scored the first run of the game, WBC scored three times in the second, to take a 3-1 lead. Williams held a 10-8 lead in the top of the sixth, but CBC scored five runs in the bottom half of the frame and kept WBC off the scoreboard in the top of the seventh, taking the game.
Offensively for WBC, Tanner Murray (SR/Piggott, Ark.) led the team with a 3-for-4 day at the plate, which included a home run, his first this season. Murray added a pair of RBIs and scored two runs. Nick Scott (JR/Jacksonville, Fla.) also had multiple hits. Scott went 2-for-4 with an RBI and run scored. Shelton added a double and pair of RBIs and Morgan Hawley (JR/Marmaduke, Ark.) scored a pair of runs.
CBC pounded out 16 runs on 16 hits in game three to double up WBC in the 16-8 decision. Shelton, Scott and Layne Ditto (FR/Walnut Ridge, Ark.) provided the offensive spark at the top of the lineup, as the top three hitters went a combined 6-for-13. Shelton's 2-for-4 outing included a home run, his second this season, two RBIs and a run scored. Scott went 2-for-4 with a double, two RBIs and a run scored. Ditto added a 2-for-5 outing with an RBI. Silas Huskey (FR/Harrison, Ark.) and Ross added a pair of runs scored.
The Next Series:
The Eagles will travel to Hannibal, Mo., on Friday, March 25, for an American Midwest Conference series against Hannibal-LaGrange University. The game on Friday is scheduled for a 3 p.m. start, and the doubleheader on Saturday is scheduled for a noon start.
