The Williams Baptist College baseball team traveled to Parkville, Mo., for a three-game American Midwest Conference set on Thursday and Friday. The games were moved from Walnut Ridge to Parkville due to torrential rainfall in Arkansas, and Williams was considered the home team for the series. WBC won the first game of the series, but the Pirates were able to rally late in the second game and won the rubber match on Friday.
Quarles Strong Outing Propels WBC:
In the first game of the series on Thursday, WBC starter Ethan Quarles (SR/Millington, Tenn.) had his best outing on the mound this season. The senior threw a complete game shutout, surrendering only two hits and scattering five walks, while recording two strikeouts. The Eagles lone run was scored by pinch-runner Brennan Pugh (SR/Houston, Miss.) on a third-inning RBI by Tucker Smith (SR/Horn Lake, Miss.). Nick Scott (JR/Jacksonville, Fla.) posted two of WBC's three hits in his 2-for-3 outing and Tanner Murray (SR/Piggott, Ark.) added the other hit in his 1-for-2 day.
Park Rallies in Game Two:
The Pirates held a 5-2 lead after eight innings of play, but in the bottom of the eighth, the Eagles were able to push across five runs in the inning and take its first lead of the contest at 7-5. Park would not go quietly, as the team pounced on WBC for 9 runs in the top of the ninth, taking the second game 14-7. Offensively for WBC, Scott had a perfect game at the plate, going 4-for-4 with two doubles, two RBIs and a run scored. Pedro Lopez (JR/Naples. Fla.) added a 2-for-4 day with a double and Pugh also had multiple hits with his 2-for-5 performance. Ryan Shelton (SR/Brentwood, Tenn.) added a pair of RBIs.
The Rubber Match:
For the second straight series, the third and final game of the conference set would decide which team would win the season set. Park jumped out to an early 2-0 lead after the first inning, but WBC starter Braxton Rhodes (SO/Fayette, Ala.) settled in and shut down the Pirates for the next six innings. Rhodes had another quality outing on the mound, throwing seven innings, surrendering six hits, two earned runs and one walk, while adding eight strikeouts. The Eagles scored in the bottom of the seventh to cut the lead down to 2-1, but Park responded with runs in the eighth and ninth to take the 4-1 victory and the series.
Offensively for Williams, Shelton went 2-for-3 with a walk and a run scored. Michael Ludwig (SR/Heber Springs, Ark.) added a 1-for-3 day.
The Eagles will continue American Midwest Conference action with a series against in-state rival Central Baptist College on Friday, March 18, and Saturday, March 19. The single game on Friday is scheduled for a 2 p.m. start. The doubleheader on Saturday is scheduled to begin at noon. The series will be played in Conway, Ark.
