Walnut Ridge, Ark. - The Williams Baptist College Eagles baseball team split a pair of games on Thursday, winning 5-2 in game one and losing 10-8 in game two. WBC won game three 9-5 on Friday afternoon. The games were played in Parkville, Mo.
The series win against Park University combined with a Harris-Stowe loss against Lyon on Sunday clinched the eighth and final playoff spot for the Eagles. This is the first time the team has advanced to the AMC Tournament in 12 seasons.
In game one, Braxton Rhodes (FR/Fayette, Ala. ) pitched a complete game hurling seven innings, giving up seven hits and two earned runs on four walks with seven strikeouts. Williams had three doubles in the game and was led by Tucker Smith (JR/Southaven, Miss. )'s 3-for-4 performance at the plate.
Park rebounded to win game two on Thursday by a final of 10-8. Blake Coffman (SR/Keiser, Ark. ) went 3-for-3 with a pair of doubles and Smith added a 3-for-5 outing with a pair of RBIs.
WBC pounded out 15 hits in game three compared to 10 for the Pirates. Eagles starter Dalton Freshour (SO/West Plains, Mo. ) earned the victory. He threw six innings, gave up six hits, four earned runs and had four strikeouts. Ryan Shelton (JR/Brentwood, Tenn. ) went 3-for-5 with a homerun and three RBIs.
This was the second straight American Midwest Conference series win for the team and the third straight series win for the Eagles overall.
Williams is now 16-27 on the season and 8-18 in the AMC. The Eagles will play in the American Midwest Conference Tournament later this week.
