Walnut Ridge, Ark. - The Eagles of Williams Baptist College earned a split in their 2015 American Midwest Conference opening series when they met the Trojans of Hannibal-LaGrange University. Williams won game one 14-6 and lost game two 7-5. The series was played in Marion, Ill., at Rent One Ballpark.
The series was originally scheduled to take place in Walnut Ridge, on March 6 and 7, but inclement weather moved the matches to Monday, March 9.
The Eagles won game one on the strength of their bats. The team out-hit HLG 16-to-7. Blake Coffman (SR/Keiser, Ark. ) (3-for-3), Ryan Shelton (JR/Brentwood, Tenn. ) (3-for-3), Tanner Murray (JR/Piggott, Ark. ) (3-for-5), Alex Camp (FR/Jonesboro, Ark. ) (2-for-4) and Braxton Rhodes (FR/Fayette, Ala. ) (2-for-4) all posted multi-hit efforts in the contest. Coffman led the team with three RBIs and Jon Coburn (JR/Bells, Tenn. ) led the team with two stolen bases.
Ethan Quarles (JR/Millington, Tenn.) earned his second win of the season on the mound for WBC. He pitched a complete game, surrendering seven hits and six runs, while striking out four batters. Quarles is now 2-2 on the season.
Hannibal bounced back in game two to win 7-5. The Trojans held back a late Eagles comeback, which included three runs in the bottom half of the ninth inning to earn the split.
Camp, Shelton and Coburn all had two hits in the game. Dalton Freshour (SO/West Plains, Mo. ) took the loss on the mound. He pitched four innings, surrendering six hits and three runs.
Williams is now 5-9 overall and 1-1 in the American Midwest Conference. Its next game is against the Bulldogs of Benedictine University-Springfield on Monday, March 16. First pitch is scheduled for noon in Walnut Ridge, Ark., at Shell Field.
