Walnut Ridge, Ark. - The Williams Baptist College men's basketball squad clinched the fourth seed in the American Midwest Conference Tournament by beating St. Louis College of Pharmacy on Saturday afternoon. The Eagles 65-48 victory sealed a tie for third in the AMC and gave WBC a school record 16 conference wins for the season.
Williams will have a bye to the quarterfinals, where they will meet the winner of Park University (5) and St. Louis College of Pharmacy (12). The quarterfinal will be played Thursday, March 5, at 7 p.m., in WBC's Southerland-Mabee Center.
The 17-point victory over STCOP was due in part to strong bench play by the Eagles. The bench outscored the Eutectics 34-3. They were led by Demoine Brown (SO/Luxora, Ark.) with 19 and Aaron Hamby (JR/Malvern, Ark.) 11.
WBC's defense also stifled Pharmacy, forcing 25 turnovers on 18 steals. Stanley Malcom's (JR/Chicago, Ill.) seven steals lead the contest. He currently leads the AMC and is fifth in the country in steals-per-game.
The Eagles overall record is 17-9 and 16-6 in conference. The home playoff game is the second in three years for men's basketball. Adult tickets will be $5.00, and students will be $2.00 for the quarterfinal matchup on March 5.
