Walnut Ridge, Ark. – The Williams Baptist College baseball squad opened up American Midwest Conference play with a three game series against Park University on Tuesday evening. Park swept the series by a final of 7-3 and 8-5 on Tuesday, and 23-8 on Wednesday. The three games were played on the college's Shell Field at Walnut Ridge.
The games were originally scheduled for the previous weekend, but the winter weather that hit the area moved the series to midweek.
During game two, WBC tried to mount a furious comeback in the bottom of the ninth, cutting an 8-3 deficit to a shallow 8-5 discrepancy with no outs and the bases loaded. Park's closer, Chad Gordon, was able to come in and slam the door shut on an Eagles comeback, however. Coffman finished with a 3-for-5 outing with an RBI. Michael Ludwig and Mitchell Dennis finished with a 2-for-4, respectively. Fay contributed with two RBIs in the contest.
Game three saw an offensive explosion from both teams, as Park racked up 23 runs on 23 hits, while the Eagles had eight runs on 16 hits. For WBC, Ludwig finished 3-for-5 with two RBIs, including a solo home run in the bottom of the first inning. Coffman finished 3-for-5 with two RBIs. Dennis and Jon Coburn contributed their own 2-for-3s. Williams also stole seven bases in the contest.
The losses drop WBC's record to 5-10 overall and 0-3 in the AMC. The Eagles hit the road to take on the fourth ranked Spartans of Missouri Baptist University for a weekend series. The first pitch for game one is scheduled for Friday at 2 p.m., in St. Louis, Mo. The Eagles will face the Spartans in a doubleheader on Saturday, with the first pitch scheduled for 12 p.m.
