The Williams Baptist College baseball team will open its season Friday, February 3, at Shell Field in Walnut Ridge, Ark. against the Crusaders from Evangel University. The game starts at 12 p.m. The 2012 season will open with a new head coach and coaching staff.
Frank Lee is the new head Eagle. He took the position in June after serving for several years as an assistant for Williams. Lee has surrounded himself with a staff that includes associate head coach Andy Arnold and assistant coaches Caleb Dudley and Jason Belcher. Joining them will be student coaches Dylan Karnes, Caleb Orosz and Ryan Bauschlicher.
The Eagles will take the field with ten seniors on the roster. "Our seniors have stepped up as leaders, and have led our team during the fall season," said Lee.
Williams has four captains for the 2012 season. Dakota Melton, pitcher from Mountain Home, Ark., Chris Miller, third basemen from Paragould, Ark., Ethan Clark, an infielder from Bono, Ark. and Shawn Selph, a pitcher from Jackson, Tenn., will lead as captains for the squad.
The Eagles have set goals with reaching the American Midwest Conference tournament the main aim for the program. "I feel that failing to reach the conference tournament would be a huge disappointment for our squad," said Lee.
Lee plans to rely on his deep pitching staff, as well as the Eagles outfield. He believes his pitching staff is one of the deepest in school history, and that they are able to go ten deep. Also, he has been impressed with the speed in the outfield and believes this asset will help keep other teams off the scoreboard.
WBC finished its 2011 season with five wins in its last eight contests, and wants to extend that momentum into the 2012 season.
