Quick Run Down
After falling behind 2-0 to the Rhodes College Lynx, goals from Danilo Cruz (SR/Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) and Joao Rupp (FR/Sorocaba, Brazil) tied the game for the Eagles from Williams Baptist College. However, William Mitchell scored a goal with 13 minutes remaining, giving the Lynx a 3-2 win over WBC.
How It Happened
Attacking play was on hand in the first half, as the teams combined to score four goals (two for each team) in the first 45 minutes.
It started in the 11th minute when Rhodes's William Mitchell scored a goal with his head, giving RC a 1-0 lead. Three minutes later Rhodes had an opportunity to double its lead with a penalty kick. However, WBC's Jose Reyes (SO/Poplar Bluff, Mo.) came up big with a penalty kick save, but Davis Neitzschman followed up the miss to put the ball in the back of the net to extend the lead to 2-0.
The Eagles showed grit by fighting back. In the 23rd minute, WBC peppered the Lynx goal with three consecutive shots, the final one coming from Danilo Cruz. Cruz found the back of the net for the sixth time this season.
Six minutes later, the Eagles found the equalizer when Joao Rupp stole the ball from a defender and raced on goal, placing the ball under the diving goalkeepers arms.
The defenses tightened up after this, and neither team could crack the goal.
The game changed dramatically in the 59th minute, as each team saw a player get sent off after two hard fouls. This left each team a man short, and the remainder of the game was played 10-v-10.
The game winning goal came in the 76th minute after a throw in went across WBC's box. It found its way to Mitchell, who fired the ball off the far post and into the net.
The Eagles threatened to equalize, but could not come up with the tying goal.
Both teams finished the game with nine shots on goal. Williams had 17 total shots, while Rhodes finished with 15.
Henrique Torres (FR/Brasilia, Brazil) finished with a game high six shots, placing three on target.
Jose Reyes played the full 90 minutes in goal for WBC, finishing with six saves.
Williams travels to Henderson, Tenn., for an American Midwest Conference matchup against Freed-Hardeman University on Thursday, Oct. 5. The game will start at 7 p.m.
