The Williams Baptist College Lady Eagles volleyball team traveled to Little Rock, Ark., to compete in the Philander Smith College Tournament over the weekend. The team came away with their first two victories of the season, finishing the tournament with two wins and two losses.
The first win came in a five set thriller over Central Baptist College in WBC's second game of the tournament, while the second win was a sweep over Texas College in WBC's third match of the weekend.
The Lady Eagles lost the opening match of the tournament to rival Lyon College in three sets, and the final match of the tournament in four sets to Tougaloo College.
The Scots from Lyon College met WIlliams in a rare non-conference affair in each team's first game of the tournament. Lyon took the first two sets with ease, winning 25-17 and 25-15, but the Lady Eagles fought with resistance in the third set. However, the Scots pulled out the sweep with the 27-25 set win.
Audra Nailling (JR/Paragould, Ark. ) had one of her best offensive games of the season. She finished the contest with 14 kills. The next highest for the team was six by Shelby Wallace (SR/Jonesboro, Ark. ). Nailling also earned one unassisted and one assisted block in the match.
Defensively, Makenzie Moore (SR/Nikiski, Alaska) reached double-digits with ten digs.
Central Baptist College:
The Lady Eagles got their first victory of the season in a dramatic five set match with Central Baptist College. WBC took the first two sets 25-22 and 25-20, before the Mustangs fought back to take the next two (25-16, 25-16). This took the game to the final set, where the Lady Eagles won commandingly by the score of 15-4.
Rachel Pirtle (SR/El Paso, Texas) had her best match of the season, finishing with 18 kills, to go with seven assisted blocks. Shelby Wallace added 14 kills, while Audra Nailling finished with 11. Nailing also finished with four assisted blocks.
The Lady Eagles finished the match with 14 service aces. Pirtle, Kayla Green (FR/Beebe, Ark.), Makenzie Moore, and Wallace had three a piece, while Nailling and Kayla Winfrey (SR/Marion, Ark.) contributed with one a piece.
The Lady Eagles made it two in a row in the win column with a sweep of Texas College (25-10, 25-12, 25-15). Williams spread out the stats for the convincing victory over Texas College.
Six different players registered offensive kills. Rachel Pirtle and Audra Nailling finished with six each, while Shelby Wallace added five, Alyssa Leatherman (JR/Walnut Ridge, Ark.) had four, Ashlynn Ruhl (FR/Paragould, Ark.) made three, and Kayla Winfrey earned one.
The team finished with 25 kills, compared to just 14 for Texas College.
WBC finished with 12 service aces, compared to four for TC. Emery Davis (FR/Jonesboro, Ark.) finished with a team-high five. She now has nine on the season.
The Lady Eagles dropped their final match of the tournament in four sets (25-15, 17-25, 25-15, 25-18).
Five ladies finished with five or more kills for WBC. Shelby Wallace finished with eight, followed by Alyssa Leatherman, Rachel Pirtle, and Kayla Winfrey with six. While, McKenzie Hopkins (JR/Piggott, Ark. ) finished with five. Winfrey finished the match with 25 assists as well.
Emery Davis had another good serving effort, finishing with four in the contest to lead the team.
Defensively, Makenzie Moore finished with her season high of 30 digs.
Williams will jump back to the court on Tuesday, Sept. 5, at the Arkansas Tech University Tri-Match. They will play against Arkansas Tech University and Bacone College.
