Walnut Ridge, Ark. - Williams Baptist College's Laura Helmich (FR/Avilla, Ark. ) was named American Midwest Conference Freshman of the Year on Thursday afternoon. The Avilla, Ark., native earned the honor in a ceremony at the conference tournament in Henderson, Tenn.
The hard throwing left hander finished the season in the top 10 of numerous NAIA categories. Opponents hit .167 against her, which ranked seventh in the NAIA. Allowing four hits per nine innings pitched, ranked her eighth in the country. Her .94 earned run average placed her at ninth. She allowed only 16 earned runs all year. She ended the regular season with a 15-3 record from the circle.
Not only did Helmich shut teams out from the rubber, she had a stellar season from the plate. She hit .395 with three homeruns and 26 runs driven in. Her slugging was .526, after posting a .474 on-base percentage.
